Fall 2025

Foundational 2D Design

Project 3 (Final)

Artist Statement: I chose the prompt "imagined landscape." I wanted to create a series of scenes where you can follow someone at the end of a journey home. The scenes on the left were all bound together in a small book to help make them feel more cohesive. I wanted the whole project to feel like wonder, and also very comforting, like coming home. I left the raw tears on the paper because of this.

I used micron pens on paper to create all of the drawings. I really focused on the way lines worked together to create form and movement, especially in the sky. Very few of the elements have actual outlines, which I chose to do because I makes things feel less rigid and more soft.

I chose to do it in black and white because I want the lines and forms to be the main focus, and I wanted to push myself to see what I could do with only value. All scenes are contained within a frame but the last, which spills over. I really wanted the last to draw your vision into the door, which is helped by the spilled over light. I started the house off center because it is not the focus in the first couple, then it gets more centered as it becomes more in focus. I also made the door the darkest point as it is the point I am trying to draw the eye towards most.

Project 2

Project 3 consisted of a space composition and a motion composition

Project 1

Project 1 consisted of two pieces based off of Gestalt principals.

Extra Work

Project 1 Reflection:
Overall, I think it could have gone better. I like the hands composition, but I think the silver circle would have been better as a more reflective material like foil of silver/gold leaf. I also should have the hands either painted directly on the piece or cut them out and outlined them in rough white pencil. I also could have painted the lower hand better but I ran out of time. For the trees, it falls into the same problem I keep having of my pieces seeming empty. I think it’s the lack of a true subject. My pieces work well as backgrounds but not as stand alone works. I could potentially fix this by adding a bird in the center tree, probably in the same style but bold colors and a changed pattern. Otherwise, outlining some of the leaves in either white or black would add some interest.

Project 2 Reflection:
For my space composition, I used atmospheric perspective and overlap to convey distance and space. I made many, many different pen drawings of similar style before settling on my final drawing. If I had another try at it, I would try the water texture a second time.
For the motion composition, I took several long exposure photos at night. I then digitally collaged some together to make my final image. If I could do it again, I would take more photos to have more options.
This was not the first time I was asked to create and solve my own problem. I learned I need to slow down when I draw.
